Descriptions and illustrations of inns and pubs

18th and 19th century tourists often described and occasionally illustrated the inns of Wales at which they stayed but they rarely visited public houses: as a result there are very few contemporary descriptions or illustrations of them. During the 20th century, the interiors of public houses were occasionally photographed because there was a special event such as the retirement of a landlord or landlady; a competition (such as a darts match), or a wedding reception.
