Untrue Entering of Malt. John Morgan, excise officer, charged Howell Thomas, of the Fox and Hounds Llanwnan, with having made an untrue entry of malt on the 28th of December. Defendant did not appear, and service of summons was proved. Edward Dicker, supervisor of excise, said on the 28th of December last he visited defendant's premises, the Fox and Hounds, and found a brewing of beer in operation. On referring to his entering- paper, he found two bushels of malt entered. After inspecting the brewhouse, felt certain a greater quantity of malt had been mashed than was accounted for on the paper. Waited until the liquer was drained off, and then dipped the grains, and found that there were three bushels and five gallons. The granddaughter of defendant, Mary Anne Thomas, said the extra amount was not put in with the intention to defraud. Defendant had been previously convicted of brewing without an entry at all. Fined £5 the Bench recommending a reduction to £2 10s.
