Sequel to a Ploughing Match. William Evan Thomas, Red Cow Inn, Adpar, was charged by D C.C. Williams, Llandyssul, with having sold intoxicating liquor in a booth at Parcau, Brongwyn, at 6-30 p.m. on February 5th, not being authorised under his licence to do so. From the evidence given it appeared, that defendant obtained an occasional license by which he was authorised to sell from eight a.m. to five p.m. At 6-20 P.C. Jones found the booth full of persons who were being served by defendant's wife and another attendant. He requested them to close and drew their attention to the time. Again warned them, and eventually spoke to defendant who defied the constable to proceed against him if he were doing wrong, and continued the sale up to 6-50 p.m. -The magistrates thought it was a case in which a heavy fine should be inflicted, inasmuch as defendant had set the law at defiance by refusing to close when requested to do so. Defendant would be fined 20s and costs. Sarah Davies, Rose and Crown, Newcastle Emlyn, was charged with a similar offence. P.C. Jones and Edward Lloyd, Pantderi, Llandygwydd, gave evidence in support of the charge, and defendant was fined 5s and costs.
