The stocks were used so lately as Friday, January 19, 1872, and that at Adpar, Newcastle Emlyn, when, being market-day. Police- sergeant David Davies. now of Aberayron, and still in the Cardiganshire Constabulary, was ordered to put a prisoner in the stocks for six hours, and to parade the street up and down, it being hard duty to keep the crowd back from the prisoner, the majority of the crowd being in sympathy with the pt isoner, and giving him buns, coffee, tobacco, and about six pints of beer were taken to him from the 'Red Cow,' 'Drovers' Arms,' and Three Horse Shoes-' The beer was paid for by farmers and farmers' wives, and brought to prisoner by the servants of the public-houses. Three pints were smashed against the wall near the stocks by the officer because the girls refused to take the "pints back before giving the contents to the prisoner. He was seated for three hours with both legs fast in the stocks and three hours standing with both wrists fast to the posts of the stocks."
Notes:The Three Horse Shoes isn't mentioned anywhere else. Mistake?
