INFRINGEMENT OF THE LICENSING ACT. Evan Jones, keeper of the Raven Inn, Penglais Road, was summoned for having kept his house open during prohibited hours on the night of the 17th inst. P.S. D. Evans said that on Monday night be visited the defendant's house at twenty-five minutes to 12 o'clock.. Found a number of men in the house, with glasses of beer on the table before them. Called defendant's attention to the time, and he said he had not a clock in the house. Defendant said he had sent the clock to be repaired, and it had not been returned. The men were quite sober, and they were all ready to go when Sergeant Evans came in. It was hiring-fair day in Aberystwyth, and some of the men were returning home when they called in. P.S. Evans, in reply to the mayor, said that the glasses on the table were full of beer. t> The Mayor told defendant that if he had no clock he could have heard the Town Clock strike. He ought to be more careful, because innkeepers were strictly prohibited from keeping their houses open after 11 o'clock. Fined Ii., and costs 7s. Henry Griffiths, cowkeeper, Llanbadarn John Jones, writing clerk, Llanbadarn William Green, foundryman, Llanbadarn-road P. Jones, labourer, Rhoscellanfawr, Clarach David J ones, labourer, Bow Street; John Jenkins, farmer, Penwern, Ilenllys and Lewis Owen, farm servant, Llwyn- glas, were summoned for having been in the Raven Inn after 11 o'clock, on the 17th inst., in contravention of the Licensing Act. John Jones, Llanbadarn, did not appear. P.S. Evans said he found the defendants in the Raven Inn, on the night of the 17th inst. Mr Davies Were they all sober ? P.S. Evans Yes, they were very steady. Defendant Green said he went into the house to look for his brother. He found his brother in the kitchen, but he slipped out by the backway, and Sergeant Evans did not see him. Another of the defendants pleaded ignorance of the law and one said he was waiting for the arrival of a companion. Fined 2s. 6d. each, and costs
