FOOTPADS IN THE TOWN. George Smith, a notorious character, was charged by Dominick Rooney with a violent assault. Dominick Rooney, sworn Witness lodges in George street, Aberystwyth, and is a cioth hawker. On Friday night last, about 12 o'clock, witness left the house of one Evans, Tymelin, and when near the turnpike gate met two women and a man, who spoke to him. Witness invited them to take something to drink, and, they consenting, all went to the Crystal Palace, where they partook of brandy and rum. Witness also put a pint of rum in his pocket, to take home with him. Witness was going home when the woman invited him to go home with her. They proceeded to a public-house called the Raven Inn, near the North-gate. The prisoner came ill afterwards, with some others, and asked for some of the rum, which witness refused. Then left the house, and was followed to the road by the prisoner, who struck witness several times, and knocked him down. Witness shouted "murder," and the landlord of the '"Cooper's Arms" came to his assistance, and witness slept with him that night.
John Evans, sworn Witness keeps the Cooper's Arms public-house. Early on Saturday morning witness was awakened by a noise in the street. Got up, and went down stairs and into the street, where the complainant was lying on the ground, groaning "murder." Witness assisted him into his house, where he slept that night. The blood was running from his mouth. The prisoner was committed for two months' imprisonment, with hard labour, without the option of a fine
