GOGINAN.-Hugh Pierce, a native of Holywell, but now residing at Rhayader, Radnorshire, paid a visit to Goginan on Thursday, the 21st inst. Pierce stands about six feet six inches and a half high, and his fighting acquirements at the Iron Work and at Llanidloes and other places are well known. After drinking at the Druid Inn, he went to the Royal Oak, kept by Mr. W. Price, near the Goginan mine, where he ordered some drink which he refused to pay for, and commenced kicking in the panels of the door which he broke, and also the parlour window shutters and several squares of glass, and then walked off and returned to th? Druid again. By this time P.C. Henry Jones became acquainted with what had transpired, and endeavoured to take him into custody, when Price drew his knife and threatened the constable. In the meantime Jones received his cutlass and then Pierce shut up his knife, but threatened the police with stones, when Jones drew his staff and knocked Pierce over heap a of loose stones, but it was not until be was handcuffed and bound with chains round his legs and arms that he was effectually secured, and even then there was great difficulty in putting him into a cart. Ultimately he was taken to Aberystwith and lodged in the House of Correction. Next day a special session was held before T. O. Morgan and T. Jones, Esqrs., at the Magistrate's Clerks Office, Portland-street, when Pierce was sentenced to pay £2 1s damages and 14s 6d costs, or to be committed to Cardigan gaol for two months hard labour.
