In trawling through old newspapers and documents covering the history of the licensed establishments in Ceredigion over the last couple of centuries, inevitably we've come across some wonderful stories - amusing, shocking, fascinating and some just plain strange. But they're buried in the database!
So, to save you the bother of reading everything, here are some of the highlights (and lowlights) of the history of the Pubs of Ceredigion and the characters associated with them.
The fighting landlord with a wooden leg
In 1863, the landlord of the Beehive, Trefechan, got into a fight. Both combatants had a wooden leg, and used them to maximum advantage.

John Donald Breeze
Originally from Liverpool, he lived for some years in St Dogmaels, and sadly was unable to control his drinking. He was charged with being drunk and disorderly 38 times, and preferred to spend Christmas in Carmarthen Jail rather than the workhouse!
