The present county of Ceredigion is an ancient name, thought to have been derived from Ceredig, one of the sons of Cunedda, who came from Scotland to help rid Wales of the Irish soon after the Romans left Britain. Cardiganshire was named after the former county town, Cardigan, when Wales was divided into shires by Henry VIII.
