Failed attempt to transfer licence

Mr C. Denham Evans applied for a transfer of the licence of Beach Hotel, Aberayron, from Mr Wm Newman, the present tenant, to Mr Lewis Davies, the landlord. Mr D. Pennant James for the tenant objected, saying it was an unprecedented thing. The applicant was the landlord and lived next door to the Beach Hotel. That was a very fine way to get rid of a tenant-to allow him to occupy the house during the winter and to send him off just as the season was coming. Happily, it could not be done. Mr James handed in a lease granted by the applicant to tenant for seven years from 1907. It was only by a mere accident that the tenant had heard of the attempt thus to get rid of him. Mr Denham Evans said there. was another side of the case. The tenant was brother-in-law to the applicant, and it was understood that he should remain in possession of the tenancy until a certain period arranged for between the parties themselves. He had, however, parties themselves. He had, however, paid no rent. Mr D. Pennant James objected strongly to such statements. He was prepared to go into all such details. The application, however, was irregular, and quite untenable upon quite elementary considerations. Mr Hughes, junior, acting as clerk, read an answer from "Justice of the Peace" against applicant's position in the matter. Mr Denham Evans said he was not aware till he came to Court that the tenant objected. He asked for a short adjournment so that he could make further enquiries. Mr Pennant James objected to any adjournment and submitted that the Court had no jurisdiction in such a case. The Bench: We are satisfied that we have no jurisdiction under the circumstances.
